Clare Twigger-Ross - Technical Director
Clare is a Technical Director at CEP and is an environmental psychologist with seventeen years' experience of social
research on the environment. She joined CEP in 2002 having previously worked in academia and for the Environment
Agency for England and Wales in the fields of the social aspects of flooding, environmental risk perception, attitudes
towards local environments, attachment to place, stakeholder engagement in environmental decision making,
integrated appraisal tools and techniques, and innovative methods for participation. Clare is a leading advocate for the
value of the social sciences within the environmental arena, and has used social research methods and stakeholder
engagement to facilitate knowledge brokerage specifically in the area of flood risk management and climate change.
She has led a number of projects on the social aspects of flood risk management for the Environment Agency and
Defra. The current direction of her work is widening to encompass the social impacts of climate change (specifically
flooding), vulnerability to climate change impacts together with understanding the interrelationships between social,
economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Clare is an experienced social researcher and facilitator and
has ten years experience with both the theoretical and practical aspects of consultation, participation and stakeholder
engagement. Clare was awarded a PhD in 1994 - Psychological Attachment to Place and Identity: London Docklands
- a case study, University of Surrey.
