Stakeholder engagement and public participation
CEP provides practical advice on the design and management of participation and consultation processes, as
well as undertaking evaluations of engagement and participation processes. The development of appropriate
and inclusive approaches to stakeholder involvement is a common feature of much of our work; these
approaches are characterised by involving stakeholders in environmental decision making. We specialise in
fitting methods to purpose and using a range of innovative techniques for working with communities and other
stakeholders. We have particular expertise in facilitating knowledge brokerage among stakeholders on
technical aspects of assessment, climate change, flood risk management and vulnerable groups.
Example projects include:
UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) leading the design and delivery of the
stakeholder engagement (led by HR Wallingford). For the Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (Defra). 2009 - 2012.
Evaluation of the NERC/Sciencewise Public Dialogue on Geoengineering. For the Natural
Environment Research Council (NERC). 2010-2011.
Rapid Response Catchment Pilot Project - development of draft toolkit for working with
communities in rapid response catchments. For the Environment Agency for England and Wales
(with Dialogue by Design) (2009).
Public engagement on climate change - conducted interviews with members of Defra's policy
teams, observers and speakers at a summit on climate change (with Shared Practice) (2007).
New Forest Pathfinder Project - evaluation of stakeholder participation and engagement
processes. For the Forestry Commission, (with Shared Practice) (2007).
