Water management
CEP has been involved in research and practice related to water management over many years. Our work
includes commissions related to:
Water Framework Directive: catchment-level engagement. For the Environment Agency for
England and Wales. 2011.
Farming and water for the future in the Trent catchment: innovative solutions for flood risk
management. For the OnTrent Initiative. 2010.
Stakeholder engagement and River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs). For the Department for
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). 2010.
Water governance in Central Asia - two day course in Bishkek on using public participation in
water management. For the European Commission. 2009.
Evidence gathering for North Norfolk Coastal Management Plan (led by Risk and Policy
Analysts). For North Norfolk District Council. 2007 - 2008.
Regional strategies for water related sport and recreation stakeholder engagement (led by
University of Brighton). For the Environment Agency for England and Wales. 2006 - 2007.
Water Framework Directive (WFD) measures appraisal training workshop. For the Environment
Agency for England and Wales. 2008.
Integrated Sustainability Appraisal of the Mayor of London's Water Strategy. For the Greater
London Authority (with CHERE). 2006 - 2009.

CEP has particular expertise in the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, as well as its
implementation within EU Member States. We have, for example, developed approaches to stakeholder
engagement during the preparation of River Basin Management Plans (RBMPs) and the Strategic
Environmental Assessment (SEA) of RBMPs. Our water management work has included commissions for the
Environment Agency for England and Wales, European Environment Agency (EEA) and the Department of
Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), water companies and other national and local authorities.
