Ric Eales is the founder and Director of CEP. He has more than 27 years' experience of environmental, sustainability and planning consultancy. An environmental scientist by training with an MSc in land and water management, Ric worked for two well established environmental consultancies in the early 1990s before becoming an independent consultant and establishing CEP in 1995. His particular areas of interest lie in environmental and sustainability assessment, evaluation and other decision support tools, environmental and spatial planning policy and legislation and the broader consideration of sustainability issues within UK and EU legislation, policy and practice.

He has managed and been the director in charge of numerous studies for the UK Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Environment Agency, Scottish Government and the European Environment Agency (EEA), for example, including projects related to Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA), environmental evaluation of policy and practice, climate change adaptation, water management, ecosystem assessment and green infrastructure. He has published widely and has been a guest lecturer on several university undergraduate and post graduate courses.

He is also an experienced trainer and has worked with Imperial College London to deliver several of their short course programmes over many years, for example in SEA and climate change adaptation, as well as providing in-house training to various organisations in the UK and overseas. In 2019 he was appointed a Visiting Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
